2. Site Visitors
Just by merely using this website for information purposes, GBIF North America Region, like most site operators, collects personal data of the sort that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the IP address, the browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of each visitor request. GBIF North America Region’s purpose in collecting this information is to enable operation of the website and monitor and prevent abusive use of the website.
The legal basis for the processing of these data is our legitimate interest to offer you to visit our site cf. Art. 6 No. 1 lit. f GDPR.
These data will not be combined with other data sources. After use for the above purposes, the data are erased by GBIF North America Region after 30 days.

5. Using GBIF North America Region’s Help Desk
If you send a message to our Help Desk a “ticket” along with your email may be logged in our ticketing system. GBIF North America Region will keep details provided during a support conversation private. From time to time GBIF North America Region may add your email to an appropriate mailing list for additional information. Individuals may remove themselves from mailings by following the unsubscribe link provided in every GBIF North America Region email.

6. Aggregated Statistics
GBIF North America Region may, with the visitor’s prior consent, collect statistics about the behaviour of visitors to its website. For instance, GBIF North America Region may monitor the most popular pages, support articles, and blog posts on the site. GBIF North America Region may display this information publicly or provide it to others. However, GBIF North America Region does not disclose personal data other than described in the Protection of Information section below.

7. Disclosure and transfer of your data
GBIF North America Region discloses personal data only to those of its employees, contractors and affiliated organizations i) that need to know that information in order to process it on GBIF North America Region’s behalf or to provide services available at GBIF North America Region’s websites, and ii) have agreed to comply with current privacy regulations.
GBIF North America Region will not rent or sell personal data to anyone. Other than to its employees, contractors and affiliated organizations, as described above, GBIF North America Region discloses personal data only in response to a court order or other governmental request, or when GBIF North America Region believes in good faith that disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the property or rights of GBIF North America Region, third parties or the public at large.
To allow for transfer of data to Google in the US, GBIF North America Region and Google have entered into Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission which give personal data essentially equivalent protection as it has in Europe.
GBIF North America Region uses the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) as a data processor for the purposes of technical hosting of the website.
Data processors may not use personal data for other purposes than to fulfil the agreement with us and are under a duty of confidentiality with regard to such data. We have entered into written data processor agreements with all data processors that process personal data on our behalf.
8. Retention
We will only retain your personal data for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, regulatory, tax, accounting or reporting requirements. We may retain your personal data for a longer period in the event of a complaint or if we reasonably believe there is a prospect of litigation in respect to our relationship with you.
9. Your rights
According to the GDPR, you are entitled to the following rights against GBIF North America Region as a data subject:

The GBIF North America Region Privacy Policy goes into effect as of 9 July 2021. Although most changes are likely to be minor, GBIF North America Region may change its Privacy Policy from time to time, and at GBIF North America Region’s sole discretion. GBIF North America Region encourages visitors to frequently check this page for any changes to its Privacy Policy.
